This class will enhance students’ understanding of the classic masterpieces in the world historiography including the Korean, the East Asian, and the Western histories. Students will read and write individual book reviews on the selected works from the list of the historical masterworks designated by the History Department. These individual book reviews will be shared in a group discussion later.

The major issues will include selection of the topic, review of the extant studies, bringing up the new issues, gathering and analysis of the materials, organization of the contents, footnoting, and syntax and style.

This course explores the Japanese empire which left an indelible impact on post-1945 East Asia. The purpose of this course is 1) to provide basic understanding on the making and unmaking of the Japanese empire as well as the diversity of experiences within the empire, 2) to help students locate the experiences of the Japanese empire in comparative perspectives, 3) and appreciate diverse perspectives interpreting its history. The lecture part explores the who constructed, operated, and dismantled the empire how, a significant blind spot in the Korea public debates despite historians’ vested interest in independent activism during the colonial period. Beside the textbook, students will read memoirs of a Japanese settler in Manchuria to understand the first-hand experiences and their diversity in the empire.

Intellectual History of Democracy and Republicanism is an English-taught undergraduate course that combines lectures and discussions. It offers a perspective from the field of intellectual history to explore the historical traditions and contexts of democratic and republican thought of the past. The primary objective of the course is to acquaint students with intellectual-historical methodologies drawn from various disciplinary approaches to history. Throughout the course, there will be an emphasis on synthesizing current research on democratic and republican ideas, including their displacement over time. Students are encouraged to approach their studies diligently, take initiative in their learning, and actively participate in English-language communication.
HIS3046 Reading Modern China History 3 6 Major Bachelor 1-4 Chinese Yes
The learning goal of this course is to improve the ability of students majoring in history to interpret the original Chinese text, and it is intended to strengthen the major in-depth learning in the field of Chinese history. The main reading content of this course is to examine the formation process of the Chinese people in modern China. In particular, we intend to deepen our understanding of how major figures in modern China understood the Chinese people through reading Chinese sentences and historical records, such as Liang-Qichao, Zhang-Taiyan, Sun-Wen, Li-Dazhao, Chen-Duxiui, and Mao-Zedong.
